If we can show that encoding and retrieval phases exist, then perhaps we can also show whether a rat can learn episodes on a single traversal or not. If they can, then the second traversal should result in significant retrieval activity. This may be more clearly observable on the third or fourth U, since the necessary autoassociative items in terms of place cell patterns may then be available, and the task may be understood by the rat.
